Pharmacology:

Calcium and Vitamin D3 are essential for maintaining calcium balance in the body. Maricoral contains Calcium Carbonate sourced from coral origin. The Calcium Carbonate from coral has a chemical structure similar to the composition of human bone. Vitamin D3 aids in the absorption of Calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and helps maintain Calcium balance in the body.

• Osteomalacia

• Rickets

• Tetany

• Hypoparathyroidism

• Disorders of osteogenesis

• Parathyroid disease

Dosage & Administration:

One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician. Taking the tablet with a full stomach ensures better absorption.

Side Effects:

Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. It may also cause constipation. Flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation and upper gastrointestinal discomfort may rarely occur. Hypercalcaemia due to prolonged use has rarely been reported.

Warning & Precaution:

When hypercalcemia occurs, discontinuation of the drug is usually sufficient to return serum calcium concentrations to normal. Patients with a history of stone formation should also be advised to increase their fluid intake.

Contraindications:

• Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism

• Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation

Drug Interactions:

Oral Calcium can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations. A minimum interval of 3 hours should be allowed between ingestion of these medications.

Thiazide diuretics reduce the renal excretion of Calcium. Phenytoin, barbiturates and glucocorticoids may induce the metabolism of Vitamin D3.

Concomitant ingestion of certain foods such as spinach, cereals, milk and its derivatives may reduce the intestinal uptake of Calcium.
